Hasui 巴水: Moon Over Kiyosumi Garden 月の清澄園
Artist: Kawase Hasui 巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Moon Over Kiyosumi Garden 月の清澄園 Date: 1938
Soft evening scene of the pond at Kiyosumi Garden in Tokyo. We feel, rather than see the moon, and the focus is on a stone lantern, with carefully groomed pine trees behind. One can still experience this pristine view, as this official Place of Scenic Beauty was made a public park in 1932, following its donation by the Mitsubishi Group. It was formerly part of the residence of a feudal lord in the Edo period, and then in the Meiji Era it was acquired by Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of Mitsubishi. With the Watanabe seal used between 1930 and 1941. First edition.
