Hasui 巴水: Dawn Over Lake Shoji
Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957) Title: Dawn Over Lake Shoji
Date: 1935
Mount Fuji’s peak glows red from the rays of the morning sun, the colors also catching in the reflection on Lake Shoji. Pines in the foreground help to frame our view. As in all Hasui designs, this work has many layers of scenery that give it depth; first the boughs of pine, then the trunk, then the lake, then two sloping hills, and then majestic Fuji-san against the final layer of blue sky. This work was published by the Tourist Bureau of the Japanese Railway Ministry, and was originally affixed to a calendar. This design always lacks the publisher’s seal.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
