Hasui 巴水: 千手の滝, 赤目千手滝(初版)(SOLD)
Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Senju Waterfall, Akame 赤目千手滝 (First Edition) Date: 1951
Brilliant and serene autumn portrait of Senju, one of the five waterfalls of Akame, now located within the Muro-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park, east of Nara in Mie Prefecture. Senju Falls is named after the Thousand-armed Kannon, as the splashing water resembles the deity’s thousand hands. Although a postwar design, the skill of the printing on this work gives it the feeling of a prewar print, as the rocks have a rich, velvety feeling and the waterfall and foliage have been rendered with loads of depth. This dealer has never seen this work with such bright orange leaves, and the contrast of the bright color against the muted background also make this a very successful design. The smoothness of the water in the foreground, in contrast to the rough rocks and flowing water, is also a compelling element. Rarely seen in this condition in the first edition. With the red Watanabe seal in use at this time in the lower right corner.
