Unknown Artist (Kunikatsu?): The Naval Battle Off Dagu Mountain
Artist: Unknown Meiji Artist (Kunikatsu?)
Title: The Naval Battle Off Dagu Mountain Date: September, 1894
On September 17, 1894, the first large battle of the Sino-Japanese War was fought in the Yellow Sea, just outside of the mouth of the Yalu River, near the islands of Haiyang and Zhangzi. This battle is known as the Battle Off Dagu Mountain, the Battle of Yalu River, or the Battle of Haiyang Island. All of the ships are labeled with red cartouches, at least the ones that Japanese seem to have destroyed. This artist is unknown, and his style is somewhat unique in that there is not a traditional keyblock with outlines that create the scene. Instead, the feeling is almost of a cartoon, as the ships seem to lack proper scale. Swimming haplessly in the foreground are Chinese soldiers, and a few cling to the mast of their sinking vessel at right, a very sad sight.
