Kiyoshi Saito: Pencil Drawing of a Seated Girl (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Saito Kiyoshi (1907-1997)
Title: Pencil Drawing of a Seated Girl on a Wingback Chair
Date: July 12, 1965

Pencil drawing of a young girl seated on a wingback chair, her hands clasped and her toes touching the ground. Saito seems to have employed several drawing techniques, perhaps the most interesting being the continuous line contour method, in which the pencil is kept to the paper and the artist rarely takes his eyes off of his subject. The girl’s face is sketched in a more realistic style. Many pencil drawings from earlier periods are published in the 1999 monograph from the Kiyoshi Saito Museum (see pages 164-179). According to the new book “Saito Kiyoshi: Graphic Awakening” by Rhiannon Paget, Saito returned to life drawing in the mid-1960s, focusing especially on the female form, inspired by the croquis sketches he had done in the 1930s (see page 120). Drawings by Saito seem to come to market only very rarely.
