Works in this category are primarily preparatory drawings in sumi (ink) from the brush of the artist as they compose the designs for woodblock prints. We also sell sumi paintings that were intended to stand alone as finished works. Collectors are warned that there exist many drawings that were done by students, copied from prints as part of the training process. It is important to know how to identify works done by students after a finished print design and works done by the masters themselves when designing an original print. Egenolf Gallery has been specializing in this overlooked area for decades, and we are especially known for our expertise in drawings by Kuniyoshi and Yoshitoshi, although authentic drawings by these artists are getting increasingly difficult to acquire. We are always looking to buy original Japanese drawings, so collectors are encouraged to contact us if they own drawings, especially ones purchased from us in the past.
