Title: Monks dining
Date: ca 1840s

Sensitively depicted with humor and empathy are several blind men dining. The man upper right drops his teacup as his companion expresses dismay. Seated are two men in front, one of them amiably grasping at his food. The man to the far left is perhaps singing to the small boy he carries in his arms, whose upraised fist is most charming. Blind people were reserved the occupations of massage, playing the biwa and acupuncture so that they could support themselves in society.
