Mezumi no irodori sampukutski. Famous kabuki scene where the retainer Otokonosuke (right) has tried to capture a bad rat and has hit the rat on the head. Then the rat reappears as Nikki Danjo with a scar on his forehead, as he had transformed himself into a rat to get some important document to the villains in the story. Nikki Danjo, the magician is shown left, with the scroll in his mouth, the hand mudra and a cloud of smoke. He usually sits atop a giant rat, but here is wreathed in clouds of smoke, wonderfully done, with just the grey outlines of his lower robe appearing through the smoke.
