Title: Miyamoto Musashi and the Batlike Monster
Series: “Handsome Heroes of the Water Margin” (Biyû Suikoden).
Date: 1867/4th month

The famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi defending himself against a magically oversized batlike creature in the dark of night. This creature resembles a giant bat, but apparently what is depicted is a creature known as a Nobusuma. The Nobusuma were bats who transformed into demonic flying squirrels after many thousands of years, according to Edo Period lore. An early work by this artist, but already showing his originality and unique vision.
