Yoshitoshi: Benkei and the Giant Carp (Saitôki Wakamaru)
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Benkei and the Giant Carp (Saitôki Wakamaru)
Series: Essays by Yoshitoshi (Ikkai zuihitsu)
Benkei fighting the giant carp in the waterfall of Bishamon ga taki. One of Yoshitoshi’s masterpieces, this example is probably the one of the finest anywhere. The Cole Collection example at LACMA is in poor condition, as is the example at the Pushkin Museum. This example features beautiful woodgrain and shading in the water and the upper margin is untrimmed so we see the very end of the tail of the giant carp.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. One of the finest extant examples anywhere.
Dimensions: ôban (37 x 25.2 cm)
Literature: See “Beauty & Violence”, number 23.8, page 111.
