Tsuji Yahei Morimasa, a retainer of Takeda Katsuyori. Here he might be helping his lord escape after suffering defeat at the Battle of Temmokuzan. Judging by the amount of blood it seems remarkable that he survived at all. The men portrayed are actually from the civil war that Yoshitoshi witnessed firsthand in 1868. This is considered one of Yoshitoshi’s most graphically brutal series, and was completed soon after the Meiji Restoration.
