From the series “Records of Light and Darkness at Kagoshima”, one of thirteen known designs depicting the Satsuma rebellion of 1877. Maebara Ikkaku stands defiantly, sword in hand as a bullet lands beneath his feet. Yoshitoshi was sympathetic to the samurai rebels.
