“Genpei dannoura ô-gassen no zu”, The Great Battle Between the Minamoto and Taira at Dan-no-ura (Keyes 160). This famous naval battle of Dan-no-ura took place on March 24, 1185 on the strait near Shimonoseki. Chased out of Yashima in Shikoku, the Taira confronted the Minamoto at Dan-no-ura. At the beginning, the battle was favorable to the Taira, but as soon as the tide changed the Taira were defeated. This print depicts a powerful attack of the Minamoto against the ship of the Taira on the left sheet. Minamoto no Yoshitsune (on the top of the right sheet) sneaks out from behind the rocks and charges toward the ship of the Taira together with Chiba Tsunetane with his red flag (on the center sheet) . Taira no Noritsune on a small boat (on the right sheet) is struggling with the soldier of the Minamoto. Ise no Takekuni and Ise no Saburo Yoshimori of the Minamoto are swimming in the big wave to ambush the enemy. In the distance on the mountain (on the left sheet) we can see the castle of the Taira clan.
