The legendary hero Uso no miko, “Little Prince Usu” was the third son of the 2nd century Emperor Keikô. In this scene he had been sent to crush a rebellion on the island of Kyushu. He has disguised himself as a woman and is about to join the rebel feast, sword beneath his robe. He will then wait until the chieftans are drunk before doing away with them. The way the smoke floats in front of the patterned curtain is very inventive.
