Title: The Ghost of Hatsuhana in a Waterfall
Series: One Hundred Ghost Stories of China and Japan (Wakan hyaku Monogatari)
Date: 1865

The ghost of the virtuous wife Hatsuhana appears to Shimobe Fudesuke in a waterfall at Gungen Shrine. He appears as misty as the waterfall itself, with no feet to support her and her hands folded in what looks like a supplication. He appears eager to hear what she has to say, and leans forward to listen intently. Hatsuhana committed suicide rather than submit to the advances of the evil soldier Takiguchi Koozuke, and after death she collaborates with his servant Shimobe to avenge her death by killing Takiguchi.
