Title: Chô Jun and Ri Ki Wrestle Underwater
Date: 1887
“Chô Jun, the White Stripe in the Waves, Wrestling in the River with Ri Ki, the Black Whirlwind”. The source of the story is the Chinese “Suikoden”. This is an early edition of this print, with the the figures and the sea creatures printed in a soft way that mimics how objects are seen under the water.
This diptych comes in at least three different states; the water stripes differ in each print also. Chô Jun is shown on top, with Ri Ki seeming to be in trouble. There is a happy ending, as friends broke up the fight and Chô Jun was invited to join the band of river pirates.
