Title: Kato Ishidomaru Visits his Father 加藤 石動丸 Series: Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan (Kôkoku nijûshikô)
Date: 1881
A disarmingly young Kato Ishidomaru is greeted by his father Sayemon with a mixture of apprehension and uncertainty. He holds his son’s face in his hand, while the boy grasps hold of his wrist. His father wears the garb of a priest, and maple leaves fall from the tree above. We see the traveling gear of the boy on the ground at right, which includes a hat and walking stick. It is emotionally touching due to the boy’s youth and bravery, and for expression and posture of the father. This is from the first edition, which has the earlier Yoshitoshi signature that is appropriate for this period. The father is Kato Sayemon Shigeuji, a daimyo of Kyosu, who abandoned his station to become the priest Karukaya Doshin.
