Title: Chofu Village Moon 調布里の月
Series: One Hundred Aspects of the Moon 月百姿
Date: 1891

Two rural women soften cloth with mortars beneath the full moon. On either side runs the the Chofu River, one of the famous Six Jewel Rivers, whose beauty was also portrayed by Hiroshige in a number of print series. Behind the women we see the cloth laying out to dry. As John Stevenson noted, Yoshitoshi chose a Shijo-style brush when creating this image, making the scene more sketchlike than the more detailed ukiyo-e style. The printing is very subtle in this very early edition, with an embossed pattern in the title cartouche and woodgrain visible in the soft sky.
