Yokohama-e of two American men posed in front of a yellow background. One carries a gun and one carries a sword; both have interesting hats. The writing by Kanagaki Robun above, describes America thus: “One of six continents.... From Nagasaki in Hizen Province it is 11,800-ri away and large states are crowned as excellent. The people are in peace and prominent in trades.” In 1861 the Japanese public were obsessed with learning about the foreigners who were recently allowed to live in Yokohama.
