Yoshifuji: Kabuki Scene in Chinese Castle with Dragon Screen (Sold)
Artist: Utagawa Yoshifuji
Title: Kabuki Scene in Chinese Castle with Dragon Screen
Date: 1859
Bando Kamezo I as Watonai’s mother Yomogiu crouches behind Arashi Kichisaburo III as Gojogun Kanki., and Bando Hikosaburo V as Kinshojo throws up her hands at left. The setting is a Chinese castle, and the actors wear splendid Chinese-style garments. We see a Chinese-style hanging lantern at left. Behind them is a magnificent screen (byobu) painted with an enormous, three-toed dragon. Here Yomogiu is interceding to save Kinshojo from Kanki, from the play Kokusenya gassen (國性爺合戦) by Chikamatsu. Yoshifuji was an Edo-based artist, a student of Kuniyoshi, but here is illustrating a print for the Osaka market.
