Title: Cryptomeria Avenue 杉並木
Date: 1937
Sugi namiki. We feel the presence of the towering cryptomeria trees in this peaceful village scene. A man loads a horsecart on the path as children play nearby. The sky transitions a soft pink in the distance, and the colors of the trees in the distance fade to a soft blue haze. These ancient trees were planted during the Edo period, beginning with Matsudaira Masatsuna, who brought seedlings from Kii province around 1625. Now these roads near Nikko are lined with 13,000 cryptomeria trees, forming a monumental approach to the shrines and temples of Nikko. Sadly, this peaceful path in Yoshida’s time has probably now become a highway.
