Yoshida Hiroshi 吉田博: Sacred Bridge, Nikko 神橋 (Sold)
Artist: Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) 吉田博
Title: Sacred Bridge, Nikko 神橋 Date: 1937
Beautiful and lush summertime view of this iconic red bridge, the river rushing blue and white beneath its span. The famous Shinkyo bridge at Nikko crosses the flowing Daiyagawa river. It stands at the entrance to Nikko’s shrines and temples, and is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful bridges. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yoshida notes that ten woodblocks and 58 impressions were required to create this artwork. Prints by Hiroshi Yoshida need to be completely unfaded, as here, to appreciate the great attention that the artist paid to capture the many subtle colors and shades of the landscape. The shrubs and grass near the shore have their own shades of rich green, and the nearby grove of cryptomeria trees have a completely different color that is closer to blue. The sky also has a subtle yellow glow.
