Artist: Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) 吉田博
Title: Evening in Nara 奈良の夕 (First edition)
Date: 1933

Hanging lanterns glow a deep orange, lending gentle and timeless illumination to an evening scene of the Nigatsu-do pavilion of Todai-ji temple in Nara. We see a group of visitors admiring the view, which includes large conifer in the background. The culturally significant Todaiji Temple includes one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, and it was founded in 752. Sealed “Jizuri”, or “self-printed”, left margin. Some versions of this print seem to have been printed with shades of red on the pavilion, and some were printed in more of a deep brown-green palette, as here. Unfaded, as shown by the bright orange of the lamplight.
