Yoshikazu: Yorimitsu and the Shuten Doji (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Utagawa Yoshikazu
Title: Yorimitsu and the Shuten Doji
Date: 1858

Minamoto Yorimitsu on Mount Ôe (Yorimitsu Ôeyama-iri no zu). Yorimitsu dances, fan aloft, encouraging alcoholic consumption by the seated Shuten-doji, who holds a large sake cup with his right hand. This Shuten-doji is only given away by two subtle horns and strangely bulging eyes, unlike his more monstrous depictions by other artists. Most charming are the groups of assembled demons and ogres, also engaged in the feast..
