Kitano Tsunetomi: The Heron Maiden (Sold)
Artist: Kitano Tsunetomi
Title: The Heron Maiden
Date: 1925
Heron Maiden (Sagi Musume). The beautiful and tragic heron maiden peers out from her sheltering robes, her face a study in sensitivity and subtlety. Large snowflakes have been hand-applied with gofun, in addition to a background of silver mica. Considered one of the top designs in the shin hanga category of beautiful women (bijin-ga). Three rectangular seals in lower margin read right to left dai go kyû gô (number 59); chôkoku Yamana Ryôkô suri Matsuno Kassui (carved by Yamana Ryôkô, printed by Matsuno Kassui) and Nezu Seitarô zôhan (Copyright of Nezu Seitarô). Note that the Muller example shown in the seminal book “The new wave” also is toned, with damage to the mica. This example compares rather favorably to it. Chosen for the cover design of “The Women of Shin Hanga” book.
Condition: Excellent impression and color; very good condition. Borders have toning, as is often the case.
