Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: Symbol  Date: 1954

Luminous view of an arched opening with a glowing mosaic effect; within it rises a formation that is peaked on top and may echo the stained glass windows of mosques that he may have visited during his tour of the Middle East in 1968.  Toshi was a very skilled printer and carver, and his experimental works are said to be more aligned with his heart than his works that were more strongly naturalistic and done in the style of his father, Hiroshi. As noted in Kendall Brown’s essay (see reference below), his art exudes a sense of the spiritual. Titled “Symbol” in pencil lower left, and editioned 10/200 and signed and dated by the artist in lower margien “Toshi Yoshida 1969”.
