Toshi Yoshida: New Year's Morning in Ginza (SOLD)
Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: New Year's Morning in Ginza
Date: 1958
Hinza no Hatsu Hinode. Morning of New Year’s Day in Ginza. The wide avenue of a Ginza shopping street shows two cars and a streetcar; the clock reads just before seven. The artist has taken an innovative approach in terms of the blocks; this is a departure from his earlier work which looked very much in the style of his famous father, Hiroshi Yoshida. Here he has mixed a mingei-style approach with a very modern and urban subject. We see the activities of the chisel everywhere. The sky also seems to vibrate with the early energy of the New Year. Although there are many posthumous editions of this design, including some printed very recently, this one is pencil-signed by the artist, so it is an early, lifetime first edition. The title at bottom left indicates that this work was intended for the Japanese market.
