Title: Rain at Magome 弘明
Date: 1922
Series: Eight Views in the South of Tokyo (Tonan Hakkei)
A farmer leads an ox pulling a cart past rows of green and yellow crops. It must be late springtime, judging by the the fruit trees blooming in the distance. The trees in the foreground are shown in dark shadow, and the rain comes down in white streaks. Magome is today a suburb of Tokyo, with perhaps a few scattered fields. The Ota City Folk Museum is located in Magome, which was where the scholar Hisao Shimizu (1953-2020) worked as he wrote about and exhibited the works of Hiroaki. This artist did not create many oban-sized works prior to the 1923 earthquake, which destroyed all of the blocks and prints of the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. Scarce.
