Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) 高橋松亭 弘明: Sawatari in Joshu in Snow
Artist: Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei)
Title: Sawatari in Joshu in Snow
Date: 1924-1927
A man in a straw raincoat heads back home after working, perhaps as a woodcutter. Two dogs trail him on the path, in a charming touch. The crows flying in the sky provide a contrast to the white landscape and fly on a diagonal, in the best Hiroshige style. Like many Hiroaki scenes, we could be seeing an image from 100 or 200 years earlier, as he preferred to depict a timeless, pre-industrial Japan in its full Japanese-ness.
