Artist: Katsukawa Shuntei
Title: Two samurai fight next to a waterfall
Series: 16 Retainers of Nitta (Yoshisada)
Date: ca. 1813
Takezawa Shingo (I Danjo) has pinned his opponent, short knife drawn and long sword broken on the ground. He wears a helmet of antlers and a mirror. From the Tales of the Taiheiki, Nitta Yoshida had sixteen warriors who had made a pledge of mutual support; these were great archers who were known as the League of Sixteen. This series serves as an interesting precursor to many of Kuniyoshi’s designs of heroes and warriors.
