Title: Crossing Tatsuta; Beauty and Courtier from the Tales of Ise 風流錦絵伊勢物語

A beauty seems to look off into the distance, perhaps searching for the handsome courtier who hides behind a screen in her garden. Longing and missed connections seem to be important ingredients in this classic tale that was written in the tenth century; it is the oldest continuously illustrated secular narrative in Japanese history. Number ten in the series of 48, this illustrates episode 23, part two of the Tales of Ise.
