Shinsui: Morning Glories and Grasshopper (Oversized First Edition)
Artist: Ito Shinsui (1898-1972)
Title: Morning Glories and Grasshopper Series: Three Themes of Still Life
Date: 1939
Larger than life closeup of three blooming morning glories and their climbing vines. The flowers have a beautiful pink glow near their center, and radiate outward in a joyful greeting of the morning sun. Although the background is a muted grey, each leaf has its own varying shades of green, and great care has been taken with their colors. A grasshopper poses nearby on the bamboo trellis. Works from this series rarely come to market, and this example is in exceptional condition for a work of its size. There are two Watanabe seals on this work, the exact same two that are shown in the catalogue raisonné. The rectangular seal in the left margin was in use between 1935 and 1941, making this a first edition.
Condition: A few minor spots on left margin. Overall very clean.
