Artist: Nitta Seizô (active ca. late 19th century)
Title: Scouting Enemy Movements on Ice Near Yingkou
Date: 1895

An evocative and atmospheric scene of scouts making their way across a frozen lake, led by a figure who has arrived at a blufftop overlook and readies his binoculars. The details such as the horse’s steaming breath as it carefully places its spiked shoes atop the ice as well as the shadows cast by the moon add terrific realism to the scene.
