Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: Sangetsu-an, Hakone Museum 箱根神仙郷 - 山月庵 Date: 1954
The Hakone Museum of Art is famous for its moss garden with stone paths that are lined with maple trees. The Sangetsu-an teahouse overlooks the moss garden, and this must be its entrance. Colorful and inviting, there are trees with mottled bark and plants of many varieties and sizes, along with a stone lantern at right. The ground may be covered in moss, as it is also given a complex pattern of colors and textures. The many textures and colors of this print give it a strong impact that belies its size. Although there are many posthumous editions of this design, including some printed very recently, this one is pencil-signed by the artist, so it is an early, lifetime first edition.
