Scene beneath a bridge at night. Ishidome Busuke, the servant of Watanabe Shizuma, the samurai shown at right, points a bloody finger stage left. He seems to be recounting his violent encounter with his master’s enemy. Busuke will give his life in pursuit of his master’s enemy, and the blood from hidden wounds is quite copious. Shizuma appears strangely unmoved by this scene, but perhaps he is just planning his next move to exact even more revenge. This is a scene from a famous vendetta play, “Igagoe Dochu Sugoroku,” written by the great Chikamatsu and based on a true incident from 1634.
