A beautiful example of benigirai-e (“pictures avoiding red”), done only in tones of black and grey with a yellow background. Some scholars suggest that benigirai-e were done in response to strict sumptuary edicts in force during the late 1780’s, while others feel they were inspired by brush paintings with simple coloring.
