Title: Rain and Moonlight at Gohonmatsu (Gohonmatsu Amenotsuki)

Steam-powered paddle boats ply the waters beneath a cloudy sky on this riverbank view. A large tree is silhouetted above, and pedestrians carry old-fashioned paper lanterns. Kiyochika is known as the “Master of Night”, and here his strength at capturing atmosphere is on full display. The protective silhouette of the tree contrasts the pre-industrial natural beauty of Japan with the coming shift to mechanization and industrialization.
