Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika
Title: Fireworks at Shinobazu Pond
Date: 1881

Two boys climb a willow tree for a better glimpse of the fireworks bursting over Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. We see an orderly row of silhouetted figures, their backs to the viewer. A row of lights shine in the middle distance, probably lanterns strung along the periphery of the pond. Kiyochika’s works from this series often are found with numerous color variations. This example seems to have used a grey keyblock, so that the overall effect is grey rather than black.
