Title: Night Rain in Yanagihara
Date: 1881

Yanagihara yau. A jinriksha driver calls out to pedestrians on a rainy night in Adachi Ward. Everyone is turned away from the viewer, accentuating the feelings of alienation many people experienced during the Meiji period. A dog begs for food or attention, but the driver ignores the dog the way the pedestrians ignore the driver. The few figures that do not carry lanterns look almost wraithlike in the darkness.
