Title: Our Fleet Bombards Darien Bay
Date: 1894
Our Fleet Bombards Darien Bay. A commanding Japanese warship shells the fortifications at Talien (Darien) on November 6, 1894. To quote Henry Smith II: “The giant ship is a pure war machine, its immensity and geometry accentuated by the two clusters of tiny human silhouettes on the forward deck. In the surrounding waters, great waves are churned into animated peaks, more powerful by far than the spiked explosions of the returning Chinese fire.” This is the only known work by Kiyochika that is larger than a triptych. Rare design.
