Kiyochika: Snow at Ryôgoku

Kiyochika: Snow at Ryôgoku (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika
Title: Snow at Ryôgoku
Date: ca. 1879

Street scene of evening falling on a street in Ryôgoku. It is interesting that almost every face is obscured or turned away from the viewer. We see telegraph poles and streetlights featuring prominently. Kiyochika here is communicating the strong sense of isolation that many Japanese felt during this rapid period of Westernization. The print also mimics western engravings in many areas.
