Emperor Meiji and His Consort in the Plum Garden (Miyo shun’e no baien). The Emperor, looking like the rooster in a henhouse, is surrounded by women in western finery. Most resplendent is his consort, hatted and wearing a violet confection that must have been sent straight from Paris. Behind them is a the plum garden in early spring, just when the trees are beginning to bloom. In the distance rises Mount Fuji. The interior decorations are entirely western, with a few Chinese touches.
