Title: Minamoto Yoshitsune’s Boat Leap
Series: Episodes from Unknown Japanese History (Nihon gaishi no uchi)
Date: 1884

Minamoto Yoshitsune Leaping across Eight Boats (Iyo no kami Minamoto Yoshitsune). The indomitable Yoshitsune accomplishes his famous leap during the Genpei War between the Taira and Minamoto clans. This is a subject tackled often by Kuniyoshi, but here there is a more modern feeling, as the waves and the soldiers are rendered more realistically. An incredible depiction of a roiling, boiling sea. A rare series that seems to owe a debt to Yoshitoshi’s similar historical triptychs.

Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. Minor mounting discolorations at corners and some surface wrinkles.
Dimensions: ôban triptych
