The loyal trooper Private Kimura Gemmatsu, himself wounded, leans over his wounded commander, Captain Asakawa Toshiyasu, who grieves over his fallen horse. Trooper Gemmatsu’s horse looks exhausted, and perhaps disgusted by the whole ordeal. Kiyochika often paid special attention when depicting horses, who often seem more expressive than the military men who ride them.
