Kiyochika: Tara no Tadanori Beneath a Cherry Tree (Sold)
Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika
Title: Tara no Tadanori Beneath a Cherry Tree
Date: 1884
Taira no Tadanori sits contemplatively beneath a stately cherry tree, about to compose what becomes a very famous poem on a deserted beach. His armor sits behind him. Cherry blossoms are falling around him, usually an artistic shorthand for impermanence, often used to indicate that the subject will have a short life. Taira no Tadanori was the brother of Taira no Kiyomori, and was killed in the Battle of Ichi no Tani in 1184.
