Half-length portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jiraiya, posed in front of a scroll that reads “Jiraiya”. His face and hair have been rendered with immense skill and care and show the mastery of the printmakers during this period. The play was “The Heroic Tales of Jiraiya” (Jiraiya goketsu monogatari), mounted at the Kawarasaki-za in the 7th month of 1852. This work is dated from the 8th month of that year.
