Title: Gomo (Wu Meng) Starting a Fire
Series: Brother Pictures for the Twenty-Four Paragons of Filial Piety (Ekyodai michibiki nijû shiko)
Date: 1840

Gomo (Wu Meng) is shown in the inset fanning an herbal fire to produce to protect his sleeping father from insects. This represents one of the 24 Chinese Paragons of Filial Piety. In the main picture we see a beauty blowing through a bamboo tube to start a fire. The smoke lazes across the top of the picture in a charming way, and there are printed sprinkles that must imitate gold flecks all across the background of the design.
