Maboroshi. The evil magician Nikki Danjô resplendent in court robes, appears in grey robes, enveloped in a cloud of smoke. He and the smoke appear to merge in this print as he possessed the mystic power to walk on smoke. His garments have been embellished with oxidizing lead grey pigment and contain patterns which enhance the illusion of of appearing magically from the cloud surrounding him. His hands are hidden, holding up his trousers. Probably from the play “The Famous Tree at Sendai”.
