With only the full moon as witness, the actor Danjûrô VIII in the role of Endô Moritô holds up the severed head of Kesa-gozen on the stone steps to the Jigan Temple. It is at this moment that he realizes that he has just murdered the woman he loved, who had disguised herself as her sleeping husband in order to save her honor. Moritô later becomes the priest Mongaku and stays for weeks under the icy waterfall of Nachi Falls to attempt to atone for this sin. Perhaps this relates to Genji as Genji is another name for the Minamoto Clan, whose struggle against the Taira clan is recorded in the “Tales of the Heike”.
