Title: Station Ôkute: Hag of Adachi Moor
Series: Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidô Road

The Hag of Adachi Moor, also known as the Old Woman of the Lonely House (Hitotsuya rôba). The wretched and wrinkled old hag has raised her fearsome knife, but her beautiful daughter stays her hand. The intended victim is a handsome young temple page in ordinary form, but we can see that he is actually an incarnation of the bodhisattva Kannon, whose soft outline we can see in the background. The rope that holds the usual murder weapon, a large rock, is seen hanging diagonally in the upper left corner. Yoshitoshi of course created a famous vertical diptych of the same story.
